Nathan Aké Leaves Manchester City as Fenerbahçe Complete £8.5m Deal
Nathan Aké’s time at Manchester City has come to an end after Fenerbahçe completed a deal to sign the Dutch international defender.
According to Sky Sports News, the Turkish club will pay an initial £7 million fee, with a further £1.5 million potentially due in performance-related add-ons. The agreement brings an experienced and decorated defender to Istanbul while allowing City to part ways with a player who had entered the final year of his contract.
Aké arrived at Manchester City from Bournemouth in the summer of 2020 in a deal worth around £41 million. While he was not always a guaranteed starter, the Netherlands international became a trusted member of Pep Guardiola’s squad and played an important role during one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.
During his six seasons at the Etihad, Aké collected four Premier League titles, a UEFA Champions League winner’s medal, two FA Cups and two Carabao Cups. His versatility, ability to play as both a centre-back and left-back, and reliability in big matches made him a valuable option across multiple campaigns.
The move comes after a difficult final season for the defender in terms of playing time. Aké made 18 Premier League appearances, but only six of those came as starts. With competition for places remaining fierce and his contract approaching its final year, a transfer increasingly appeared to be the logical outcome for both player and club.
For Fenerbahçe, the acquisition represents a significant statement of intent. The Turkish giants continue to strengthen their squad with players who possess experience at the highest level of European football, and Aké arrives with a trophy haul that few defenders in the game can match.
His arrival is expected to provide immediate leadership and defensive stability. Having played under Guardiola in one of Europe’s most demanding tactical systems, Aké brings technical quality on the ball as well as defensive intelligence. Those attributes should make him a valuable addition as Fenerbahçe look to challenge domestically and compete in European competition.
From Manchester City's perspective, the departure closes a successful chapter. While Aké may not have commanded the headlines as often as some of City's star names, his contribution across multiple title-winning campaigns was significant. Injuries and increased competition limited his opportunities in recent seasons, but his professionalism and consistency ensured he remained a respected figure within the squad.
The transfer also reflects the natural evolution of City's squad. As contracts near their conclusion and younger options emerge, decisions must be made regarding long-term planning. Aké's departure creates additional flexibility while giving the player the chance to pursue a prominent role elsewhere.
For the defender himself, the move offers a fresh challenge at a stage of his career where regular football could prove particularly important. At 31, he arrives in Turkey with considerable experience and remains capable of influencing matches at both domestic and European level.
Fenerbahçe supporters will hope that experience translates into immediate impact as the club continues its pursuit of major honours. If Aké can replicate the consistency he displayed during his years in Manchester, this could prove to be one of the more astute defensive additions of the summer window.
The Final Third View
Aké's departure feels less like an ending and more like a logical next step for all parties involved. Manchester City secure a fee for a player entering the final year of his contract, while Fenerbahçe gain a defender with elite-level experience. The key factor will be playing time. Aké has spent years competing in one of the strongest squads in Europe; in Istanbul, he is likely to be viewed as a cornerstone of the defence rather than a rotational option.
